ONL's Climbing Wall System wins the Wood Innovation Award 2012

The parametric climbing wall system developed by ONL [Oosterhuis_Lénárd] in cooperation with climbing specialists Mountain Network and engineering firm Arcadis, has won the Wood Innovation Award 2012. The developed parametric design system, in which design and production are directly linked, adds to a more widespread application of wood as a building material, according to the judges. The system has been used for the climbing walls in the two climbing centres of Mountain Network in Dordrecht and Amsterdam.

“The parametric design system connects construction and computation techniques. This way it is possible to create complex folded scale structures in wild shapes in a fast and efficient manner. The system is momentarily applied to climbing walls. The jury foresees a wide range of wood applications with the use of this system.” With these words, the chairman of the jury and professor of wood structures at the Technical University of Eindhoven, Jos Lichtenberg handed the Wood ...

Can wooden skyscrapers transform concrete jungles?

Swapping cement and steel for timber is the vision of a number of environmentally-minded architects who are planning high-rise buildings across the world. Architect Michael Green has plans for a 30-story wooden skyscraper in Vancouver, while plans are afoot in Norway and Austria for 17- and 20-story buildings that use wood as the main building material, eschewing steel and concrete.

Craft practices are at once defined and restrained by their connections to tradition. Viewing woodworking in the context of objects made with wood; housing, particularly stick frame construction, emerges as possibly the most widespread use of the material throughout the modern world. Utilizing these techniques in a studio based practice, it is my hope to further the conversation on how notions of craft fit into the modern world.

Boston-based design and digital fabrication firm Radlab, Inc has sent us an exceptionally cute example of robo milling: a baby crib with a twist.

The hybrid crib and youth bed was commissioned with an interest in creating an alternative to the standard crib: solid instead of slatted, low and partially open rather than high and closed off, compelling and integral as opposed to generic and alien. Our response, in an effort to provide a framework for processing these pragmatic and aesthetic concerns, was to explore an interplay of conceptual dualities: dark and light, hard and soft, thick and thin, solid and void, analog and digital.
