The iconic Media-TIC building in Barcelona, designed by Spanish architects Cloud 9, has beaten off competition from hundreds of buildings around the globe to win the ‘World Building of the Year 2011’ award at the prestigious World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards in Barcelona.

Today's the last day of the largest global celebration of architecture, the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona, and while the programs and parties slowly commence, we're happy to announce the World Architecture Festival Awards Category Winners of day one and day two on our sister site Bustler. Winning projects of the final festival day have yet to be published, but we'll keep you posted.

The World Architecture Festival Awards program has announced its 2011 award shortlist with 281 entries spanning the globe from as far south as Tasmania to the Arctic Circle in Norway with new countries such as Libya, Haiti and Cambodia appearing alongside the USA, UK, Australia, China, Japan, Spain, and Scandinavia.

New for WAF 2011 is the introduction of the OpenBuildings People’s Choice Award which is being supported by our friends at OpenBuildings.com. To view the shortlisted projects, cast your vote and provide comments, visit: http://openbuildings.com/peoples_choice/waf/leaderboard. Votes can be cast by selecting the Facebook ‘like’ icon on the project page or by downloading the OpenBuilding mobile app from iTunes.

World Architecture Festival Announces Michael Sorkin as Head of ‘Super-Jury’

World Architecture Festival (WAF) has confirmed Michael Sorkin will head-up the ‘super-jury’ at this year’s WAF Awards, to determine which building, from entries across the globe, will be crowned with the ultimate prize - ‘World Building of the Year 2011’.

The jury will also comprise Ben van Berkel of UNStudio, Rotterdam; Jo Noero of Noero Wolff Architects, Cape Town; Odile Decq of ODBC, Paris; and Kongjian Yu of Turenscape, Beijing.

If you are thinking about submitting projects into the WAF Awards, you better hury; all entries close on July 1.
