Studio Gang to design new home for the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival in Upstate New York

Studio Gang has revealed plans for the new home of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival in Upstate New York.

Located in the town of Garrison, the 13,850-square-foot performing arts space is set to become the first-ever LEED Platinum theater design in the United States when it is completed.

Nelson Byrd Woltz will provide landscaping for the site, a 98-acre former golf course that was donated to the company in 2020. Anchored by an open-air theater, the design frames the surrounding natural landscape to allow for actors to emerge from the topography.

A timber-framed shell with wooden columns that supports the proscenium arch is carefully oriented to frame the surrounding Wey-Gat (or “Wind Gate”) for the audience and players. Studio Gang to design major expansion to the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock

The Clinton Foundation has announced that Studio Gang will design a “major expansion” to the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. The proposed expansion, details of which will be revealed next year, will seek to “help the Clinton Center fulfill its mission to engage and educate people about President Bill Clinton’s lifetime commitment to advancing opportunity for everybody.”

In addition to increasing the existing center’s capacity for exhibitions and conferences, the expansion will also include the new Hillary Rodham Clinton Institute which will hold the personal archives and papers of the former First Lady and Secretary of State.

Studio Gang has completed work on the $465 million new Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Coinciding with the official public opening today, the museum has shared first photos of the project, showcasing the 230,000-square-foot wing that replaces several outdated small buildings with new education and exhibition spaces, a theater, storage, laboratories, insectarium, and butterfly vivarium.

Studio Gang’s Museum of Natural History expansion set to open as construction photos show ‘fluid landscape’ interior

The Studio Gang-designed Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation is approaching completion in New York. Set to open on May 4, 2023, the project is the latest addition to the city’s American Museum of Natural History and is described by the firm as “a fluid landscape that heightens visitors’ sense of discovery and wonder.”

The scheme has been designed to improve the functionality and visitor experience of the museum campus, creating a new accessible entrance at Columbus Avenue. The building forms thirty connections with ten different buildings, while also providing new exhibition, education, collections, and research spaces. The project broke ground in 2019 following permit approval in 2016.

Studio Gang selected to design Women's Leadership Center in Williams Bay

Studio Gang has been selected to design the campus of the Women’s Leadership Center at Williams Bay in Wisconsin.

The Center will rise atop a nine-acre site along Geneva Lake. It will serve as a space to gather women leaders across various industries, including engineering and technology, infrastructure and design, space and astrophysics, public and private enterprise, and more, to foster discourse and collaboration. The campus will be positioned near George Williams College of Aurora University and the Yerkes Observatory.

Studio Gang to design new home for University of Kentucky’s College of Design

The picture is getting clearer for the Studio Gang-envisioned new, unified home for the University of Kentucky's College of Design after final renderings and a project timeline were just revealed.

The firm beat out five other top-flight firms for the renovation of the former Reynolds Building, which was announced three years ago and has since been bolstered by a $5.2 million gift from local developers Gray Construction.

A proposal for the Memphis River Parks Partnership's Studio Gang- and SCAPE-designed waterfront park in Memphis has taken a step forward as the firms present their latest visions for the 30-acre project site.

Following years of design and community engagement, the semi-final design of Tom Lee Park includes a collection of discretely programmed landscaped areas designed alternately to accommodate human needs alongside those of the mighty Mississippi River.

The northernmost section of the park connects to Memphis's Beale Street and to a forthcoming downtown art museum, while central portions are geared more toward neighboring community use.

The Harvard Allston Land Company (HALC) in Boston has selected a development team led by Tishman Speyer, Studio Gang, and Henning Larsen to create the first phase of a new research campus at Harvard University.

The proposed 36-acre Enterprise Research Campus, according to The Harvard Gazette, could bring a mix of laboratories, residences, and commercial uses to a former industrial rail yard situated in the town of Allston on the banks of the Charles River. Also included on the project team are design firm Utile and landscape architects SCAPE. The project team, as it happens, is powered by three woman-led offices: Mette Kynne Frandsen at Henning Larsen, Jeanne Gang at Studio Gang, and Kate Orff at SCAPE.

Chicago-based Studio Gang architects, Aurora Capital Associates, and William Gottlieb Real Estate have completed work on 40 Tenth Avenue, a 10-story, 160,000-square-foot, prismatic boutique office building created for New York City’s Meatpacking District.

The structure is marked by a terraced corner window configuration that steps in and out from the tower’s waist to create dramatic views and dynamic corner offices overlooking the High Line for the tower’s occupants. This so-called “Solar Carve,” according to the architects, “explores how shaping architecture in response to solar access and other site-specific criteria can expand its potential to have a positive impact on its environment.”

Following delays caused by a lawsuit aimed at protecting the adjacent, city-owned Theodore Roosevelt Park, construction officially kicked off for the American Museum of Natural History’s new Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation. Designed by architect Jeanne Gang, the $383 million Center will add new galleries, classrooms, a theatre, and an expanded library while linking 10 museum buildings for better circulation throughout the campus.

Studio Gang's first NYC residential tower, 11 Hoyt, tops out in Brooklyn

Jeanne Gang’s first residential tower in New York, 11 Hoyt, topped out this week at 620 feet after launching sales last fall. The 57-story building located in front of Macy’s in Downtown Brooklyn, will have 481 condos ranging between $695,000 for a studio and $4.35 million for a four-bedroom unit.

Jeanne Gang named in 2019 “TIME 100” list

Referring to the growing socioeconomic divides in our cities, Jeanne has warned her profession against “sorting ourselves into architects of the rich and architects of the poor,” and focuses instead on discovering “new possibilities for the discipline and beyond.”

From her iconic Aqua Tower in Chicago to closing the pay gap at her practice, Jeanne Gang continues to make waves in the architecture profession. This week, Gang was the sole architect to be included in the 2019 ‘TIME 100’ list, which recognizes the world's most influential individuals for their activism, innovation, and achievement.

“For Jeanne, architecture is not just a wondrous object. It’s a catalyst for change,” wrote actor and playwright Anna Deavere Smith in her TIME citation on Gang.

In recent years, Gang was named a 2018 RIBA International Fellow, has received the 2017 Marcus Prize for Architecture, and was the 2016 Architect of the Year in the Women in Architecture Awards, among other accolades. A few of Gang's upcoming projects include the University of Chicago Center in Paris — her first project in France — and the $8.5 billion expansion program for Chicago's O’Hare International Airport.

Achieving pay equity is a foundational act of building an environment in which creativity can flourish. Taking the first step toward equality via pay empowers us to move forward, together, to address the more complex challenges that await. Comprehensive, math-based tools are available to assess the problem. Let’s put them to work. Follow the money (or lack thereof), and fix pay inequity now.

Jeanne Gang's firm Studio Gang recently scrutinized their office for any existing pay gap. She explains that despite their prioritization of equality there was in fact a small gender pay gap in their office.

Using her own practice as an example, Gang urges every architecture studio to go through the same process. Gang calls for other firms to "use the assessment tools, determine where you are, and make the needed adjustments" citing this step as the the easiest and most concrete way to correct inequality in the workplace.

The 10-story glassy building was shaped by the firm's strategy of studying the sun's angles to prevent shadows but increase natural daylight and view inside. Jeanne Gang reveals 51-story condo next to Downtown Brooklyn Macy’s

Tishman Speyer released on Monday the first renderings for its new luxury residential tower in Downtown Brooklyn, 11 Hoyt. Designed by Jeanne Gang’s architecture firm, Studio Gang, the 51-story, 480-unit condominium project will offer a variety of apartment layouts, with more than 190 different floor plans. The tower’s rippling exterior seems to borrow elements used in two of Gang’s Chicago projects, the Aqua Tower and the Vista Tower, which is currently under construction. The project will rise next to the Macy’s on Fulton Street, which is currently undergoing renovations by Tishman Speyer, who are also planning a 10-story office tower on top of the store. Every summer, the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. puts on an imaginative Summer Block Party series of temporary structures. Past installations that have graced its historic Great Hall have included James Corner's "ICEBERGS," Snarkitecture's "BEACH," and BIG's "Maze."

This year, the museum tapped Studio Gang to temporarily transform the space. The resulting installation, named "Hive," has opened to the public and will be available to visit through September 4th. The structure, resembling some sort of cross between a beehive and pipe organ, is that tallest structure the Museum has displayed thus far. Built entirely of more than 2,700 wound paper tubes and topping out at 60 feet, it is shocking that it took a mere two weeks to construct.

The National Building Museum in Washington D.C. revealed the renderings of Studio Gang's upcoming 2017 Summer Block Party installation called the “Hive”, which is the firm's latest collaboration with the Museum.

Located in the Great Hall, the Hive will be made entirely of over 2,700 wound paper tubes whose heights will range from several inches to 10 feet tall. The tubes will be interlocked to create three interconnected, domed chambers, with the tallest dome reaching 60 feet high and featuring a 10-foot-diameter oculus. Every tube will have a reflective silver exterior and a vibrant magenta interior to create what seems like will be a dazzling environment.

People can gather at the larger main chamber for the Museum's summer events, or they can hang out in the smaller, intimate chambers where they can also play with tubular instruments like drums and suspended chimes. The High Line is rapidly becoming not just a popular tourist site, but a veritable avenue of major—and glitzy—architectural projects. Studio Gang has announced that they will join the roster of big-name architects with buildings lining the pedestrianized train tracks. The firm has released the first images of the Solar Carve Tower, a 166,750 square foot tower commissioned by 40-56 Tenth Ave Joint Ventures.

The Solar Carve Tower gets its name from the design strategy responsible for its angular form. In short, the edifice gets its shape from combining parameters imposed by its allowable envelope with angles derived from solar paths, as well as views of the nearby Hudson.

Studio Gang has beat out Allied Works and Michael Maltzan to win a commission to design an expanded art and design campus for the California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco. The decision follows a two-year search and planning process.

Currently, the CCA campus is split between two sites in San Francisco and Oakland. Gensler, Jeanne Gang and Cesar Pelli, SOM among firms competing for Chicago Union Station redevelopment

Chicago’s Union Station is slated to get a $1 billion facelift that could add up to 3 million sq. ft. of new buildings. Amtrak just announced a shortlist of four contenders for the gig, as reported by Chicago Real Estate Daily.

The shortlist comprises the development firms John Buck, Riverside Investment & Development, Golub and Sterling Bay. Each of the developers has a noted architectural practice on board; respectively, Jeanne Gang and Cesar Pelli, Goettsch Partners, Gensler, and Skidmore Owings & Merrill.

The teams were selected from an RFQ and will now move on to the proposal stage, with plans due by the beginning of 2017. According to Amtrak, the winning proposal will be selected by the end of the first quarter.

The winning firm could build on top of existing buildings, on land owned by Amtrak, or over the train tracks. Amtrak owns 14 acres of land and up to 3 million square feet in air rights.

Jeanne Gang's 'Polis Project' — an experiment in empathetic policing

Conceived by MacArthur “genius” and architect Jeanne Gang, the simple project is part of her broader proposal to reimagine isolated, fortress-like police precincts as welcoming community centers. In her vision, better police precincts could house a barber shop, a garden, a gym, and lounges with free wi-fi—all designed to draw community members to hang out in stations and eventually build friendlier and more trusting relationships with the cops sworn to protect them.

In Gang's project, the West 10th district's police station in North Lawndale, Chicago, includes a basketball half-court right next to it, as an attempt to create shared spaces between police and the community whom they serve. Gang's 'Polis Project' was first exhibited at the 2015 Chicago Architecture Biennial, and was conceived in response to the report on "21st Century Policing" commissioned by President Obama.
