Ai Weiwei’s Music Video, Recreating His Detention

Now Mr. Ai is answering the guards’ request in a different key. He is presenting them, and the world, with his first heavy-metal music video, one with detailed re-creations of scenes from his 81 days of detention. He also portrays fantasies he imagines flitting through the guards’ minds. Mr. Ai posted the video on a Web site, aiweiwei.com, on Wednesday morning, Beijing time.

Archinect talks wtih Ivan Blanco, winner of the LA Film Festival Director's Lounge Design Competition

Each summer Downtown Los Angeles is home to one of the most creatively-energized film festivals - The Los Angeles Film Festival. This year the festival, hosted by Film Independent, will be taking place from June 13-23. Archinect had the honor to co-host a competition to design the VIP Director's Lounge for this year's event, alongside Film Independent and Designer Pages, with an esteemed jury consisting of director Alexei Tylevich (Logan & Sons/LOGAN); architect Barbara Bestor (Bestor Architecture); actor Nick Offerman; Kimberly Brooks, from Huffington Post Arts; Megan Reilly, from westedge Design Fair; and designer Shawn Gehle (Gensler).

We talked to Ivan Blanco, designer of the competition-winning entry. Ivan heads LA-based multi-disciplinary design studio Blnko Design Labs.

Slowly it dawned on me that this was not a photograph of a real building but a total digital fabrication. I was shocked, not in a moralistic way but, rather, with amazement at the masterful deception and amused pique at being fooled.

The technologies of representing architecture have advanced steadily over the years, from drawing to photography to digital rendering — and have lately taken a new leap.

On Places, Belmont Freeman argues, "the crafts of architectural rendering and photography have now merged into a common activity of digital image-making — so completely that one can conceive a work of architecture and produce a 'photograph' of it without having to go through the expensive, tedious and corrupting intermediate step of actually building the building. Welcome to the world of architectural photography without architecture."

He discusses the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibitions "After Photoshop: Manipulated Photography in the Digital Age" and "Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop"; the MoMA exhibition "9 + 1 Ways of Being Political: 50 Years of Political Stances in Architecture and Urban Design," and recent books of photography by Frédéric Chauban and Ezra Stoller.

Henning Larsen Architects Releases New European Spallation Source (ESS) Video

Earlier this year in February, we reported that the architectual team Henning Larsen Architects + COBE + SLA had won the design competition for the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden—soon to become the world’s largest and most advanced facility for neutron-based research. The architects have now released a video which provides insight on the ESS project, building, and surroundings.

The competition team also includes the engineering partners Buro Happold, NNE Pharmaplan, and Transsolar.

Motion Picture Academy unveils Renzo Piano's design for LA film museum

Italian architect Renzo Piano, Los Angeles architect Zoltan Pali and officials from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled preliminary designs Thursday for a $300-million film museum at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. The architectural centerpiece of the 290,000-square-foot complex, just west of the campus of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, would be a giant glass-enclosed dome, which Piano refers to as the "sphere" and the "soap bubble."

Archiculture, a documentary film following architecture students, to premiere later this month

Archiculture takes a thoughtful, yet critical look at the architectural studio. The film offers a unique glimpse into the world of studio-based, design education through the eyes of a group of students finishing their final design projects. Interviews with leading professionals, historians and educators help create crucial dialog around the key issues faced by this unique teaching methodology.

As some of you might recall, we interviewed the filmmakers back in 2008 (5 years ago!) here on Archinect. Well, it seems that the world will finally see what they've been working on, starting with the world premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival on April 29th.

As we previously announced, we've partnered up with the LA Film Festival and Designer Pages to host a competition to design the interiors and layout of this year's VIP Director's Lounge at the LA Film Festival. There are only a few days left until the deadline, but don't fret, you can still submit a winning entry!

We're looking for creative solutions to the design problem described in the brief. The winner will be selected both on his/her proposal, AND also his/her experience and previous work as displayed on his/her Archinect profile. If you have a killer portfolio, and some good ideas, we encourage you to submit! The winner will be prominently displayed among a very prestigious group of wealthy and creative people in the entertainment industry, which is a pretty sweet place to market your design skills.

Announcing the 2013 LA Film Festival Director's Lounge Design Competition, co-hosted by Archinect

We're excited to announce a competition we're co-hosting with Designer Pages and the LA Film Festival. This competition seeks proposals for the interior design/layout of the VIP Director's Lounge for this year's LA Film Festival.

The winner will have their design executed, with a cash prize and an "Industry Badge" pass to the LA Film Festival in June. The winner's designs will also be on display in the director's lounge throughout the festival, which will be seen by many of the entertainment industry's most influential and respected members (hint: pretty amazing source for new clients).

130 years later, modern software helps complete Gaudi's architectural masterpiece

Using advanced aeronautical design software, Mark Burry and other architects have been able to reverse engineer Gaudi's models from leftover shards. Today, Burry is among a group of architects leading construction on the church's central tower, which, when completed, will stand 566 feet above the ground, making it the tallest church on Earth. But the fact that they had to use 21st century software to realize a 19th century vision stands as testament to Gaudi's avant garde design language.
