[...] (AIA) reported the February ABI score was 50.7, up from a score of 49.5 in the previous month. This score reflects a minor increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 61.5, up from a reading of 60.0 the previous month, while the new design contracts index climbed from 52.1 to 54.7.</p></em><br /><br /><p><em>&ldquo;The sluggish start to the year in architecture firm billings should give way to stronger design activity as the year progresses,&rdquo; said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. As AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker explains in a press release, "virtually every segment of the design and construction market is reporting that recruiting and retaining qualified staff is a growing issue. [...] (AIA) reported the December ABI score was 55.9, up sharply from 50.6 in the previous month. This score reflects the largest increase in design services in 2016 (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 57.2, down from a reading of 59.5 the previous month.</p></em><br /><br /><p><em>&ldquo;The sharp upturn in design activity as we wind down the year is certainly encouraging. This bodes well for the design and construction sector as we enter the new year&rdquo;,&rdquo; said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. Of the design industries surveyed, those working in design education, public relations, environmental graphics, and architecture logged the most overtime hours.</p></em><br /><br /><p>This probably doesn't come as a surprise to any practicing architects&mdash;working overtime, often well into the night, is common practice in the field. Moreover, this counts logged hours. This score reflects a slight increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). Licensure, which is required by a majority of the fifty states and governing agencies in Canada, usually takes a few years of intense study and rigorous examinations after one's initial formal education is complete to attain.
