Salk Center Apartments

Spring 2009

Studio with Clyde Carpenter

The focal point of the semester was Louis I. Kahn.  The first poster research projects allowed me to gather data and get a better understanding behind the works by Kahn.  Then we were given the task of developing a housing complex for the Salk Center Institute that was to house 24 to 30 researchers, and contain a pool and pavilion.  The units had to embody Kahn’s idea behind the overall Institute.  The terrain played a huge part in the design and development of the complex.  I designed 2 different units, which included 2 story and 3 story buildings.  We were given a list of items that we had to be included in the unit including kitchen, closets, bathrooms, and more.

Two sections of the apartment complex. This showed how each unit had a view of the ocean that wasn’t obstructed by other buildings. Also, the natural elevation of the land can be seen.
