Swarthmore to Accept Limited Number of Students Displaced by Katrina Disaster

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College will open its doors to a limited number of students displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

President Alfred H. Bloom said today the College will welcome up to 15 students from institutions closed by the disaster in the Gulf region. They will be accepted as special students for one semester, contingent on their qualifications and their understanding that classes are already in session and that enrollment in particular classes is subject to space availability.

HARVARD GSD
Cambridge, MA
Most of the schools of Harvard, including GSD, will be providing opportunities for substantial numbers of displaced students to study here this fall at no charge by Harvard. The students will pay tuition to their home institutions, which will be free to utilize the revenue for their own recovery efforts. The GSD itself is working with Tulane University to absorb graduate students in architecture. We have been unable thus far to identify graduate programs in landscape architecture, urban planning, or urban design that would benefit from a similar arrangement, but the GSD is eager to hear of any such cases. We will work also to accept displaced faculty members as visiting scholars this fall.

Specifically, we are accepting Tulane graduate students in architecture on the recommendation of their dean, Reed Kroloff. This will allow us to certify that they are registered in the school as graduate architecture students, and that they are capable of working at the level of GSD students. The only limit is that they will have to take a place behind our own students in lottery competitions (for upper level studios in the third year of study for MArch I students and first year for advanced degree students). They will pay tuition to Tulane and receive credit there.

We are as well reaching out to our own students and alumni who may have been affected by Katrina, to express our heartfelt concern but more significantly to ascertain whether they are safe and whether the students in particular are in need of any special assistance at this time. All those whom we have reached so far appear to be safe, but of course the tragedy continues to unfold and we have by no means established contact with everyone.

I am not currently at Rice right now but from what I can glean from the website people who are registered to Tulane University can take Rice courses on a space-available basis.* I do not know how the School of Architecture will handle that as we have a pretty small building, but maybe try contacting the School directly to see how the Emergency Program would apply.

Tulane

Tulane University cannot hold a fall semester on its campus. While this news is extremely disappointing to all of us, our students can continue their academic careers uninterrupted thanks to an avalanche of support from our colleagues in higher education. Nine of the leading higher education associations, which represent hundreds of colleges and universities around the country, have developed a plan to accept Tulane students, as well as those from other institutions adversely affected by the hurricane, for the fall semester only. This coalition has set forth guidelines for temporary enrollment for the fall semester. Tulane University will accept credit for all courses with a passing grade from regionally accredited universities; such credit will be applied to a student's Tulane course of study. We encourage all Tulane students to enroll in courses that they might have enrolled in at Tulane, but equivalent or near equivalent courses will also count to degree progress. Students enrolled in Architecture should enroll in universities with programs that are also accredited.

In addition to the message below from the Chancellor's office, I am offering myself (student in Arch.Ph.D. program) to assist in finding off-campus housing, run around w/paperwork, etc. if needed. Also, I can put someone up in my apartment at least temporarily. e-mail sjohns50@uiuc.edu

From the Chancellor's Office: We all have seen the suffering and devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families. The hurricane left thousands of college students without schools and homes. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of a large number of institutions across the nation working to assist these students. If you are contacted by a student or parent regarding the possibility of late admission because of the hurricane, please suggest that they contact the Office of Admissions and Records at 217/333-0302. For financial aid assistance, please refer callers to 217/333-0100. We are able to accommodate up to 40 students and have already received our first one, who will be on campus this weekend and will start classes next Tuesday. For students who cannot come to Urbana, but want to continue their studies this fall, we are exploring ways to connect them to our Guided Individual
Study courses.

Additionally, we are working with the Champaign County Red Cross to collect donations for all hurricane victims. You can contribute Saturday, September 3rd and September 10th, at Memorial Stadium before the football games. Volunteers also will be on campus Wednesday, September 7th, and Thursday, September 9th, at the entrances to the following locations: The Quad, the Physical Plant, Grainger Library, Wohler's Hall and the Veterinary Medicine Basic Sciences Building.

We also are exploring ways to accommodate displaced faculty and graduate students, and we are sharing our engineering and planning expertise through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other response agencies.

There will be other steps we take as a campus to assist those who so desperately need our help, but these are things that we can do immediately. Thank you for your generosity.

Sincerely,

Richard Herman
