Modular Serenity

This project was an international student competition by RIBA, the Royal Institute for British Architects, and AfH, Architects for Health.

The theme of the competition was “designing for death”. In other words, the aim of the project was to design a way within our current urban environment by which people could achieve dying at peace.

We aknowledged that people in the terminal stages of their life are at a majority found in hospitals in order to get medical treatments and assistance. Our idea was to create a situation by which hospital and home become one, so that patients are familiar with their surroundings, do not feel excluded or marginalized and have both benefits of being in a medical facility and being in their own house. The way we accomplished that was by introducing modular units that could plug into facades of hospitals so that patients coud rotate their bed after receiving medical attention and be in fact transported into these cantelevered units that offered the benefits of small house including a private garden, and an extra room for family or a friend.
