Crux Climbing Center

A 24-hour indoor climbing gym located in a former autobody shop on South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas.  One third of the space is dedicated to youth programs, and the main hall is geared towards events & competitions. Clean space, natural light, and simplicity were driving factor in the function of this design, while scale, sectionality, and texture guided the spirit.

The facility is a renovated warehouse complex with a preexisting form. We cut into the facade with a cantilevering glass box that forms a workout mezzanine and also covers the entry procession below.

Reception for the gym is light with punches of color and a locally tailored shop for Texas' climbing needs. Also, the check-in desk will be a single, massive chunk of limestone.

Crux will be light and spacious for the day-to-day athlete as shown here, but will also offer enough space to accommodate world-class competitions and events.
