This project began with designing at the micro-level; study carrels and book-mobiles, which culminated in creating a structure to house them. Located west of the Charlottesville Transit Center, the Downtown Library plays off of the existing public stair that addresses the grade change from Main Street to Water Street, creating a dialogue between the two structures.
The library’s form is an abstraction of the natural movement of visitors to Downtown – a “slippage” into alleyways of boutiques and restaurants. This movement became the motif for the pieces of program, resulting in a visually dynamic structure that is able to establish street-front presence.
