Los Angeles maritime Museum

In this USC graduate studio project, I was given an existing building, the los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro, CA, and had to create a new and larger museum using some of the existing elements.  I did a study looking at the shoreline and discovered that the land came inward, pointing towards the maritime Museum.  With this, I created the museum as a knuckle on the site, connecting it to land and water as well as the eat and west directions.  I kept the existing wings of the building and demolished the central area, creating a large box running through the building which connected the land to the water.  This large box acted as the entry and gallery/ public space.  The wings became the private spaces consisting of classrooms and management.  This central glass tube created interaction between the land and the water with a tube that dives into the water allowing visitors and students to be surrounded on all sides with water.
