For every space there are sounds that are associated with its programmatic
purpose. The intent of our project is to explore the forms generated from
sound frequencies and investigating the architectural applications of the resultant
forms. Thus generating form and space in response to sound rather than solely
having the sound within a space merely be a product of the designated programmatic
use. There has been some research and experimentation done concerning
the relationship between sound cymatics and architectural form, but a majority of it
has been done virtually then fabricated physically rather than by purely physically
manifestations, and it is those physicalities that are of prime interest. The goal is to
create forms such as those generated by non-newtonian fluids when place inside
of a large speaker, reacting to the sound vibrations, but will harden and keep
shape once the sound ceases.
The end results are individual physical manifestations of frequencies which
can then be constructed into a greater whole through systematic attachments—
building blocks functioning as a type of brick in creating a more cohesive structure,
space, or installation. Perhaps even another emergence may be born out of the
attachment system. These cohesive structures will be in direct response to the
sound associations of the designated program. Speaking in terms of architectural
buildings, a church may be constructed out of “blocks” that are physical manifestations
of frequencies typically found in hymns, a war memorial may materialize from
frequencies found in a gun shot, and so on.
