This week we were fortunate to have Hernan Diaz Alonso with us for both a public lecture and an extended period in our Baumer sessions. Hernan is the Graduate Programs Chair at SCI-Arc and founder Xefirotarch, a speculative practice based in L.A. The title of his lecture “Form and Gloom” took us through the firms body of work.
Using the Phrase ‘form-follows-form’ he made the point that this is the way he works is to do. Using a clip from The Dark Knight, where the Joker says “Do I look like a man with a plan? I just do…”, he explained how his process is much more active, dynamic, and responsive than in a typical project. Wanting originally to work in film, this interest has translated into his means of working; primarily in animation software. For his type of work, in which the obsession is with the image and a sense of continuity, this software is perfect. Beyond competitions his work has been physically manifested mostly in gallery pieces and installations, though they are currently working with a large client to design a space, a first for them.
His work is unique and to use his own terms “grotesque”, but he sees that as a means to find beauty and though I personally find some of his work quite grotesque, I also see some of the projects as quite beautiful…so I guess it’s working. I recommend watching his lecture. You will be able to find it once posted and past lectures on Knowltons YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/knowltonosu) and the school website (http://knowlton.osu.edu/news-and-events/lectures).
This blog will be a feeder for recent news, events, and student work occurring at the Knowlton School at The Ohio State University. Posts will typically center around updates from the schools lecture series, exciting projects from recent student reviews, and updates from other school events.
