    Four buildings in Sarajevo

I would like to share my recent thoughts and reflections about unique architectural characteristic of my native town Sarajevo, in Bosnia and Herzegovina with Archinect community...
Quite simply, it’s about four buildings: the Catholic Cathedral, Serb Orthodox Cathedral, the Synagogue and the Ferhadija Mosque.

    1. Cathedral of Jesus’ Heart, built between 1884 and 1889.

    2. The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos, built between 1863 and 1868.

    3. An Ashkenazi Synagogue built in 1902.

    4. Ferhadija Mosque, built 1561-62

Apart from being representatives of the four most dominant religions in the world, these buildings are typical buildings of their time. However, their importance in this context is the fact that they are located so close to each other on a relatively small location. So, when walking in the city center, one can almost simultaneously touch and feel Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Judaism and Islam.
Of course, there are many other examples with even older buildings as well as other religions, but here is the accent on those four buildings because of their proximity on such a small area in Sarajevo.
To understand the whole perspective of this phenomenon the scale is crucial.

As an illustration – in some other parts of the world there are really large buildings, buildings of such a size so as to take in the whole area with four buildings as shown above. For example, the Ferrari building in Abu Dhabi with 200.000 square meters, the Ministry of Finance building in Paris, the Palazzo hotel and casino in Las Vegas, and many others.
The interesting aspect of this is that those buildings are world-known, but Sarajevo and its four "large“ buildings are relatively unknown.
So, if we can speak about real values of individual buildings: Which buildings are more important than other ones? And what makes them more important?
