I haven't posted in a long long time. My wife and I made it to Vienna rather easily, although we had to leave her iMac behind because I couldn't carry it on. Apparently mac sells a iLugger that we may by to take it back. Fortunatley we have a family connection that shipped it priority and it arrived within a few days. Now, we are waiting for internet to get set up at our apartment...so I am outside on the patio in a sweater and jacket bumming internet off someone without a WEP password. Lucky me.
My wife and I traveled by train to Salzburg and Innsbruck before my studio started. It was pretty nice-somewhat touristy. The mountains were beautiful.
I met up with the entire studio Friday(yesterday). The new students that just finished their entrance projects were there in addition to the students that have been around a while. The studio ranges from guys and girls from all over Europe: Poland, Germany, Slavenia, Austira, Russia, etc...and then there is me, the American. I have been asked many times if I am from the UK, which is funny to me. I guess since I can't tell the difference in German accents of Austrians and Germans, the same applies to English accents.
Our project for the semester will be in Instanbul, Turkey. We are headed there on the 17th until the 23rd to check out the site. I will post images at portfolioandBlOG. All we know about the project is that it is "semi urban." That could mean a lot I guess.
From what I understand, Studio Lynn and Hadid will be going to, but I am not sure. I am still getting familiar with it all. Before we leave, we'll work on a "warm up" project called Dissection. It is as it sounds-we're dissecting Turkish Delight of all it elements, etc...and then doing drawiings and building models.
So, talk about anxiety. Here I am in a new country knowing virtually no German, except for "excuse me, do you speak English" and "sorry, I don't speak German." Fortunately, I think I will enjoy the time here. I don't think I am too far behind the students I will be with. It seems studio back in Houston prepared me well. As far as output is concerned, I feel fine about 3D modeling, but will have to learn the CNC routing and 3d printer stuff as UH just got all that this year(Thanks to Texas cutting higher education spending).
Prix will be at school Monday. The new students have to prepare a breakfast for him with som sort of theme. Apparently, he'll either be pleases, or get mad and storm out if he doesn't like what he sees. Fingers crossed.
