On Wednesday, July 15th, 2015, the FIU College of Architecture + The Arts (CARTA)signed a historic partnership with the Bauhaus DessauThis makes FIU the first—and only—university in the United States to have a formal partnership with the Bauhaus.

Founded in 1919 in Germany by Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus has forged new connections between all artistic disciplines, including, but not limited to, architecture, design, painting, sculpture, new technologies, and trade crafts. The influence of the Bauhaus on design education has been significant. The Bauhaus was an early innovator in teaching, learning, engagement, research, and creative activities whose signature style later became one of the most influential currents in modern design, modern architecture, art, design, theater, dance, photography, color theory and architectural education. As a School of Design, the Bauhaus in Dessau revolutionized artistic and architectural thinking and production worldwide, and is considered a headstone of the Modern age. “CARTA and the Bauhaus’s educational philosophies both transcend traditional disciplines,” said FIU CARTA Dean Brian Schriner. “The overarching goal of our partnership is to explore innovative ideas and establish new, creative networks to advance art, design and architecture.”

The partnership aligns with the strategic goals articulated in CARTA 2020 (Student Success, Research and Creative Activities, Faculty and Staff Success, University Preeminent Programs, Financial Base, and Community Based Innovation Initiatives) and FIU CARTA’s engaged mission of using “the power of architecture + the arts to create, innovate, and inspire solutions to local challenges with national and global impacts.”

Through this partnership, FIU CARTA and Bauhaus Dessau have agreed to explore the feasibility of establishing a Bauhaus-FIU “Master House Think Tank” in Miami; a physical Bauhaus-FIU “Master House” in Miami that would house the forefront of critical thinking in the contemporary discourse in art, design, and architecture; an open studio program for CARTA students at the Bauhaus Dessau; an Artist-in-Residence program representing a shared exchange between the original “Master House” in Dessau and the possible new physical Bauhaus-FIU “Master House” in Miami; and art programs and related initiatives that provide a dynamic and new way to meet the current and future needs of CARTA students and the diverse art constituencies of the Bauhaus.

The Bauhaus-FIU collaboration will help CARTA reach its CARTA 2020 goal of “being nationally recognized as a preeminent college operating at the forefront of innovative teaching, learning, engagement, research, and creative activities.”
