    STIK project part 6

The following are a series of diagrams and drawings we produced to document the process of construction before we began building. It took us a little over a month to figure out the logistics of producing the pavilion as a panelized construct and on such a large scale.

Several factors changed as we developed the final design.

Despite our early success with the cantilevered mockup, we wanted to make sure the pavilion would be safe, so we introduced seven steel cable rings, embedded through the center of the structure, to ensure tensile performance. We were confident that the system would stand in compression, but because we were working at the larger scale and in the public context we had to ensure the pavilions stability in tension.

The cable system ultimately proved useful on-site as it helped us locate the panels in their rough positions, before we 3D scanned them and then re-adjusted them according to the new data. Once we were confident of the position of the panels, we filled the seams by using both the machine, but also with quite a bit of "hand-sticking" in order to make the surface seamless and connected.

    • nice work kevin.

Its nice to read an explanation of this sort of work that does not jump straight to the finished project. We can see its a huge amount of thoughtful effort in the outcome, but its cool to get a look behind the scenes and really understand how much goes into the work.

This remains my favorite so far from Obuchi Lab. As much as I liked last year's effort this one seems to introduce a lot of room for organic transformation and play. I guess its as predetermined as anything in architecture but it doesnt feel as much, and the lo-tech hi-tech mix is brilliant. Massive redundancy is also awesome way to build.

      Hi Bill,

It was a lot of work that required development in many different directions, and because of the time constraints at the end, some parts ended up being developed a lot more than others.

The new students at the lab are trying to hone in on this "smart tool" concept and make it more smart / easy to use for next year.  Totally agree with you that this years "system" is a lot more flexible in what you can make and do with it, and even how it can be developed going forward.

Anyways, thanks much for the comment! Hope all is well :)
