TRANSITION | INFRASTRUCTURE IS CIVILIZATION

Penn Station glories through the youth but sadly has to face demolition due to the sharp decline of ridership. The whole city is down with hopeless people wandering around streets, while Pennsylvania Railway Company has no choice but demolish it or waiting for the occupation of the homeless. 

Is it a really dead end to welcome the homeless, accompany with vocational programs, and trying to tie them back to the society? This proposal will preserve the station and introduce the shelter system to benefit the building and its neighborhood. Symptomatically speaking, Penn station is showing the preoccupation with time and efficiency in the city at large, delivery a kind of hope to embrace a brand-new life decently. Speaking of architecture itself, the superstructure could also cooperate with the built material and temporary proposals for its “residence”. For efficiency, Train station are not fully engaged during night time and its 24/7 openness, warm heating and private restrooms could be offered as part of the shelter to help organize the increasing homeless people. How to program the shelter, the school and the commuter; how to introduce new, more helpful adjacent programs to the building and itself; how to facing the challenge of the future?
