20th Annual1:2 Student Competition_AIA Los Angeles, 1st Place

The American Institute of Architects Los Angeles (AIA|LA) Interior Architecture Committee held their 20th annual 1:2 Student Competition on Saturday March 24, 2012 at the offices of ZGF Architects LLP and distributed $23,000 in scholarships to deserving students.

The 1:2 Student Competition is a one-day design charette that provides an opportunity for undergraduate design students -- selected as teams of two by their instructors -- from 12 local Southern California design schools to have their design ideas critiqued by leading industry professionals and compete for scholarship prizes.Participating institutions in 2012 included: Art Center College of Design, Art Institute Hollywood, Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Long Beach, Design Institute San Diego, East Los Angeles College, Mt. San Antonio Community College, Orange Coast College, Otis College of Art and Design, Pasadena City College, Santa Monica College and Woodbury University.

The program concept and scope for the competition were carefully developed by members of the 1:2 Committee. For 2012, the students were assigned to develop THE TASTING LOT. That is, they were tasked with creating a physical space for something that is currently designed to be impermanent -- a food truck -- and develop a complete immersive experience. The esteemed 2012 jury included Braulio Baptista of ZGF Architects LLP; George Kelly, AIA of Kelly Architects; Glenn Rasmussen of Gensler; and Jennifer Siegal from Office of Mobile Design.

Winners of 2012 AIA|LA Interior Architecture Committee Student Scholarships were:

FIRST PLACE: $10,000
East Los Angeles College - Juan Pablo Onate & Bernardo Rubio

SECOND PLACE: $6,000
Otis College of Art & Design - Lori Choi & Rodrigo Zayas

THIRD PLACE: $4,000
Woodbury University - Bruno Block & Caroline Morris
