With 325 stores in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, West Marine is the world’s largest specialty retailer of boating supplies and accessories. But most of their stores are small outposts selling bare essentials. The company’s substantial inventory is primarily available online. In Fort Lauderdale, the yachting and sport fishing capital of the world, West Marine saw an opportunity to create its first 50,000-sf flagship store providing yacht and skiff-owners alike with one-stop shopping in an immersive nautical environment.
Designed to resemble the bridge of a luxury yacht, the electronics department is a destination at the center of the store. From here, customers navigate to other “worlds” devoted to fishing, boats and outboards, water sports, foul weather gear, and apparel departments that pinwheel around electronics. Bergmeyer polished and refined West Marine’s fixtures and finishes with a level of craftsmanship that put them in league with fine seagoing vessels.
