This bike rack was designed for a student competition put on by the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.
The objective was to design a bike rack that would: enhance the exterior appearance of the museum; extend the interpretive theme embodied in the museum; and if possible, use sustainable/recycled materials.
My idea for the design was based on a sailing ship’s pin rail. Using recycled steel for the structure and old anchor chain for the “rope coils,” the design is both sustainable and embodies the interpretive theme of the Maritime Museum.
The “belaying pins” of the bike rack hold bikes in place, and they can be secured to either the rail itself or the coils of anchor chains.
