The purpose of this project is twofold: first, to allow the participants to develop a spatial sense and the awareness of various design strategies; second, to provide the participants with the opportunity to explore the fascinating relationship of construction and the tectonic aspects of design.
The theoretical framework that we will attempt to address throughout this term will be informed by sensorial explorations of the concepts of ground, horizon, and transparency, as well as the Japanese aesthetics ideas of “wabi-sabi,” “mono-no-aware,” and “shakkei”.
The project will be located on a triangular lot on the Lachine Canal off the Rue des Seigneurs. Its limits are that street , an arm of the canal , which runs West to East on the North, and the bicycle path that runs along the North side of the canal.
The building will be planned having in mind the idea of a “promenade architecturale,” as stated by Le Corbusier. The general spatial requirements of the building should include:
Entrance lobby and security (two offces)
Offices (4) with restroom areas
A lecture room for 50 people
Two seminar rooms
Resarch area (library and digital facilities)
An inner courtyard
Small public cafe
Maximum square area: 900 m2
– an eight-week project
Status: School Project
