Project 3 - Retreat for Women Who Have Suffered From Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is very apparent in today’s society all over the world but it is in the poorer countries where the problem is most severe. Women are the main victims of this brought on by their abusive husbands although children tend to be victims as well. It is very hard to try and understand how these women are feeling, and how difficult it is for them to continue on without anyone hearing their call for help.

That is why there is now a need to answer their call for help, to help these women find a place where they can come for solitude, to erase their memory of the suffering that they have endured, to meet other women who have suffered in the same way and console each other and to rebuild their life again, and that is why I want to create a place that caters for the needs of these women.

Focussing on Jamaica, currently through my research I have found only one known organization in the country that helps women in this type of situation, and that is the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation located in the Jamaican capital of Kingston. So to introduce another similar place to the West of Jamaica where the site is located would be an ideal situation and will very much help the women around the area who are unable to travel all the way to Kingston.

I didn't just want to create a better environment, I want the architecture to reflect this ideal world for these women. I want to make this place look and feel good, I want to make it as aesthetically pleasing as I can and most of all I want this project to evoke a joyous emotion within these women.
