Florentine Botanical Gardens

The New Florentine Botanical Gardens aims to return the Florentine Riverfront back into the hands of the public. The existing congested space of the “Lung Arno” and its medieval parking-lot-piazzas currently confine what are meant to be public spaces to mere pedestrian through ways. The new Florentine Botanical Gardens will create a Green Thread between the two outlying parks along the barren edge of the medieval walls.

This Green Thread stitches the medieval city center and the modern outskirts of the city together building a Path that is broken up into a series of layers, establishing a unique yet familiar pedestrian experience and a new type of wall system; housing not only program but events. The gardens themselves become individual Seeds of Experience planted along the linear path, breathing life into the piazzas and creating space for transcendental thought, found no where else within Florence. The seeds are percieved as a Collective Family, each bearing its own identity
and working at the scale of the entire cityas well as the locality of each piazza. The seeds act as a living organism, absorbing natural light  and rain water used to maintain the internal gardens. From daybreak to sunser, the seeds shift from transparent gardens to Living Lanterns, creating dynamic
experiences that will guide people along the Arno River.

These Experiential gardens will enrich daily florentine life, becoming a new framework by which Florence, The Florentine People, and the river Become intertwined.  Vivo Verde!
