Vine Vistas

Our proposal for the rejuvenation of the Catelina Pollicella Negrar Winery combines both historic preservation and modern construction techniques, with the goal of looking into the future of the winery typology while retaining the traditions of it’s past. We have elected to keep many parts of the architecture completely preserved to serve as monuments that represent the existence of the winery’s past, while some parts has an upgraded façade and interior renovation, and some a completely new construction. Our design will allow the visitor to travel through an architecture that reveals the site’s natural beauty, the industry and process of winemaking, and the history of the winery.
The bold Romanesque architecture of the city of Verona acts as a deriving source for the design’s materiality, primarily in its modern interpretation of brick, which is used as a way to screen light and views. This filtration of light has a very specific language in Romanesque buildings, as the slices of light within thick brick walls are some of those particular themes that are introduced into this new extension of the winery.
The expression of material reveals itself in the sequential morphology of the building: breaks of translucent volumes within solid forms. Throughout the building, the opaque spaces get sliced through by translucent tunnels. Once the building faces the view to the vineyard, translucent space of the restaurant gets sliced through by opaque walls and steps down to the vineyard. The ramp slices into the building, connects old and new, and reveals the view to vineyard.
In many moments in the project, industry meets entertainment/leisure by integrating process with final product. The main circulation path becomes a continuous walkway that weaves through entire space creating a sequence of experiences. Through the new intervention the user is delivered to a series of vista points which allows them to experience the wine-making process in ways they ordinarily will not. A series of tasting rooms become situated among the large industrial storage tanks, and at the end of the journey you can enjoy the local restaurant, nestled in the openness of the vineyard.
