PRIVATE RESIDENCE
MAY 2010 - APRIL 2012
After retiring, my parents decided to move from Kansas back to their hometown of La Crescent, MN. They asked me to design the home, and suggested that it take stylistic cues from the bungalow, prairie, and craftsman styles.
The project is sited on over 120 acres of rolling forest and farm land. The building site is atop the western ridge of the bluffs comprising the Mississippi River valley, affording the home dramatic panoramas in all directions, with incredible views across the River to La Crosse, WI to the East.
The intent was to take stylistic cues from the suggested vernaculars, while still creating a design that was contemporary in both it's spatial arrangement and outward appearance. My parent's entire family is from La Crescent, so it was desirable that the home be large enough to entertain the extended family, while feeling intimate enough to feel comfortable when just occupied my parents.
I began designing the home while finishing my last semester at KSU. Working closely with my parents for the next year - I created several iterations of the project. After a lot of back and forth, and much deliberation, we settled on a scheme and I produced the full CD set for the project . Mastercraft Homes were selected as the General Contractor out of a select group of three builders, and I worked closely with them, travelling from Kansas to Minnesota once or more a month, and corresponding daily via e-mail and phone while the home was built. The project was finished in late spring of 2012.
