The Grand Canal is an experience for both locals and tourists. By celebrating the "vertical energy" of crossing the Grand Canal pedestrians are lifted up to a series of suspended galleries to enhance the experience of crossing the canal while also making use of the ground space at the canal's edge. Inspired by the canopy of a tree and the mobility of a sail the lightweight "sails" at the gallery's exterior provide natural ventilation and protection to the gallery and its inhabitants.
