About

My name is Grant McCormick and I recently graduated with a Master of Architecture from Arizona State University (ASU).  I completed an internship at Enric Miralles Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT) over the summer and I am currently interning at WORKPLAYS studio*architecture in West Hollywood.

My interest in the field of architecture began at an early age.  I have devoted my time to better my understanding and increase my knowledge of architecture through both academic and non-academic outlets.  I have learned from academic study and through architectural internships the process of designing, and from working in construction the practical application of creating a structure from a drawing.  Working in both areas has allowed me to visualize some of what is involved in the creation of architecture.

At ASU I received the Provost Scholarship, and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Design in Architectural Studies and a Minor in Urban Planning in 2010.  As a graduate student I received the Earl & Ellen Davis Scholarship and was nominated for the Design Excellence program.  I graduated Cum Laude with a Master of Architecture in 2012.

I spent two summers working for a framing company building houses in North Scottsdale, Arizona.  Knowing that I was studying to become an architect, the foreman showed me the process of developing a house from the drawings.  In addition to framing, I have worked in demolition and remodeling, concrete, trim carpentry, sheetrock, masonry, and welding through a combination of DIY projects and school shop training.  Through my experiences I have gained a basic, general knowledge of these methods of construction.

In the summer of 2011 I completed an internship with the firm Materia Arquitectonica in Mexico City, where in addition to beginning my training in working within an architectural office, I was also able to experience living within another culture.  Continuing on that experience, I traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina for a semester in the fall of 2011 for a study abroad program.  Living in these two different, yet congruent urban environments instilled in me a desire to learn more about Latin American housing typologies and their relationship to public space.  From that I developed my thesis project on fostering social diversity within housing and the public space, based on my studies in Argentina.

Upon graduating, I immediately began an internship at EMBT in Barcelona, where I stayed for three months during the summer of 2012.  Working there opened my eyes to an entirely different method of design which I had not previously experienced, and made me appreciate even more the importance of a rigorous process in design.

Since deciding I wanted to pursue a career in architecture I have sought out opportunities to learn about everything related to the profession that I can.  I learn best through a hands-on approach so construction was an optimal outlet for me to learn the process of taking an architectural drawing and creating architecture, and living in Spain and several Latin American countries was the best way for me to truly study how people use and occupy public space and its relationship to housing.  I am enthusiastic about taking the next step to continue my education by beginning my career in architecture.  If you find that my experience is a match for the criteria you are looking for in a potential employee, I would be happy to provide additional material to supplement what I have included here.
