Ocean Science Teaching Center

The Ocean Science Teaching Center (OSTC) is located on the uninhabited island of Shackleford Banks in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The self sustaining facility has to provide electricity, water and food for the 25 students and faculty living and studying there as well as protection from coastal dangers.

OSTC is located in of a natural clearing among Juniper Flats just off of the main path across the island. The opening to the south allows southern winds to filter through the living spaces and into the central courtyard while harsh northern winds are blocked by the landscape. Vegetable gardens located within the courtyard provide food for the residents and are protected from the local wild ponies by the structure of the building and surrounding wetlands. Rainwater collection, photovoltaic panels, and wind turbines keep the facility running and teach the users about green technology and conservation principles.
