The Urban Assembly School for Green Careers (M470) AKA Louis D. Brandeis High School serves grades 9-12 and special education. The original building was completed in 1965. This project entails an upgrade of the existing Library to conform to new School Construction Authority (SCA) standards in library technology and design.

The proposed Library upgrade is located on the third floor. The Library planned use will be for students of grades 9 through 12. HAKS is the Architect for this project and Safecon Builders Corporation is constructing the space.

The existing Library is divided into two sections. There is the open Library area (2390 square feet) for reading and research with a stack room (492 square feet). The second section of the existing (overall) library space is the Music room (1529 square feet) including ‘4’ separate practice rooms. An existing IDF room (63 square feet) is included within the overall library space.

All interior partitions including the CMU stack room wall(s), with the exception of the existing IDF room, will be demolished. All finishes including the ceiling, floor and paint are to be replaced. The existing mechanical system is to remain and there is minor plumbing work to replace the existing sink in the existing stack room. There are many new electrical connections being installed at all perimeter locations of study. We are adding duplex and quadruplex outlets in all spaces, as well as wall mounted raceway at the computer stations.

A new librarian office/work room will be built along with a new storage room for stackable chairs as suggested by the school principal. The design intent is to open up the library providing areas of research and study, soft seating areas and instructional areas for teaching. A centralized circulation desk will be designed opposite the library entrance for student inquiries and direction.

The total square footage of the Library upgrade will be 4,475 square feet. The estimated construction cost is $580,000. The design start date was 6/14/2013.and the Library upgrade will be constructed through the spring/summer of 2014 for fall 2014 use.
