It’s early in the morning. The sun is coming up as the dark sky reveals hidden colour. I inhale and fresh air fills my lungs. I look at my partner and she looks back at me. All is ready. I put my hand over my eyes and the other over my chest and I let my body fall on its back. As I drop I can feel my body touch the fresh surface. Suddenly I am under. The sound of impact is mixed with air bubbles as I enter the water. I open my eyes and check on my partner. All is ready. I inhale again. As I exhale bubbles come out of my regulator and climb to the surface.
Check and double check! Under water exploration may be one of the most rewarding activities one may find. The danger is obvious but this Last Frontier has many secrets and can help us learn about the past of our civilization, and the past of Humanity.
With the index finger and the Thumb touching we signal we are “ok”. With the thumb pointing down we communicate that it’s time to descend. Together we start moving towards the bottom. As we descend the pressure increases. We look around and imagine what we will find once we get to the bottom. No one has been here before. The colours change as we descend and the sunlight stays behind. After a few meters the red disappears, then the green turns into blue until all that’s left are a million shades of blue.
At the bottom we hover over the sand and rocks. Curious fish come to welcome us to their home. It’s a beautiful sight we want to share with other people. My partner photographs this bluish scenery. Sunlight beams find their way through the water and illuminate the air bubbles that come off our regulators. Fish go through the bubbles and down to the rocks. 30 meters above our boat is the only dark spot on the surface, from here it looks like a small whale resting. It will remain here until we come back.
I look at the compass and point North so we can begin to explore. We go through a rock corridor and at the end we see a strange surface. As we get there we turn on our flashlights and suddenly everything comes alive with beautiful colours. The strange curved surface is an old boat on its side. The metal surface is covered with colourful life, seaweed and kelp. More fish welcome us as my partner takes pictures. This is their home now. What would be junk above water here is a kingdom where life is queen.
Metal and seaweed are one, this dead boat is alive. We continue to explore in search of an opening in the hull to enter.
