This mixed-use building is comprised of the renovation of a 26,000-square-foot office building and a 15,000-square-foot addition that establish a strong presence along a busy street (Neckarstrasse) in this growing Darmstadt neighborhood. The existing office building had a stucco façade with a regular pattern of punched windows and a traditional pitched roof. We preserved much of the interior structure and replaced the exterior façade so that the existing and new buildings would be perceived as a singular, contemporary addition to the city.
The design of the façade is inspired by the paintings of American artist Brice Marden – abstract works that are simultaneously playful yet structured. Like the interwoven strands of color meandering across a Marden painting, mahogany, glass, and stucco bands rhythmically carry the eye along the facade. The effect is heightened by the shifting depth of the planes on the surface of the building, which break down the mass of the structure into smaller volumes and enliven the composition.
