The fundamental idea of this project is to create new urban connections using space creatively. The LA Habitable Bridge is a gateway and a local destination in the form of a suspended horizontal mega structure. It welcomes people to the city, its river, and its diverse art and culture. It can be seen by motorists from the adjacent freeways. The project takes them over the 1st street Bridge. It presents itself hovering above them. The new structure stands independently, and it is detached from the existing 1st street Bridge. Once people are on it, its circulation is clear and simple. Multiple vertical towers located at both side of the existing 1st street Bridge connect it to mixed-use areas and parks. The new structure provides multiple levels of activities. At the top levels there are residential, office, and retail areas. At the 1st Street bridge level it offers walking, biking, light rail and automobile lanes. At the ground level it connects to the projected LA river parks. It is a horizontal urban mega structure that connects to the city at many levels. The LA Habitable Bridge works as a new urban link.
