RIBA honors Royal Gold Medalist Lesley Lokko in London ceremony

Lesley Lokko formally received the 2024 RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture at a ceremony at the Royal Institute of British Architects headquarters in London today.

The award, which was presented to Lokko on behalf of King Charles by RIBA President Muyiwa Oki, enshrines her dedication and creativity in leading the 2023 Venice Biennale along with other curatorial and educational efforts which have spearheaded a push for professional and academic representation while advancing a narrative about the lessons African and other non-Western architectures can teach the broader profession.

Speaking to the more than 400 attendees gathered in RIBA's 66 Portland Place headquarters, Oki remarked: "Lesley Lokko is a true agent of change who has successfully shifted the dial and pioneered a more equitable approach to architectural education, dialogue, and discourse."

Brookings research gives Los Angeles communities guidance for future ADU implementation

New research published recently by the Brookings Institution has provided details of how local government in Los Angeles can galvanize a newfound abundance of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) through policy changes in order to combat an ongoing housing crisis currently affecting more than one million Angelenos.

Authors Jenny Schuetz and Eve Devens state: “The Los Angeles region offers a useful setting to explore the prospects of affordable ADUs. Four jurisdictions within the region have developed affordable ADU pilot programs. One program, the city of Los Angeles’ LA ADU Accelerator Program, offers operating subsidies for existing ADUs, while the other three offer development subsidies as well as vouchers to cover operating costs.”

Plans scrapped for $1 billion Hollywood Center towers development

New York-based developer Millennium Partners has withdrawn their proposal for the $1 billion Handel Architects-designed Hollywood Center in Los Angeles. The two-tower scheme that was planned for parking lots adjacent to Welton Becket’s iconic Capitol Records building would have been the tallest in Hollywood, standing at 46 and 36 stories each and containing a total of 1,005 residences, but will now be scrapped in favor of a potential new hotel development as per Urbanize LA’s reporting this morning.

The decade-old scheme had been progressing despite a negative Environmental Impact Report and the late discovery of concerning fault lines beneath the property. Philadelphia Co-Working Space by Verona Carpenter Architects

This project, our second for one of the pioneers of co-working space, involved the conversion of three buildings into one learning and working facility for the creative community. We provided the space plan, custom furniture design, and finish specifications.

The project sought to preserve much of the original buildings’ character, like the plaster medallion over the main open space, while also providing a state of the art workplace.

Building on the brand language we established in Brooklyn, the space features a blackened steel, wood, and glass reception and retail area, and our custom large scale collaborative steel and wood tables with integral power.

Pelli Clarke & Partners and Jun Mitsui & Associates have shared photos of the recently completed Asahi Shuzo’s Dassai Blue Brewery project in Hyde Park, New York. The adaptive reuse of a former grocery store into the first American home for the popular Japanese brand pays homage to the naturalism of its native country while mirroring the “dance” of fermentation.

Inside, 55,000 square feet of space for rice washing, Koji-making, drying, steaming, and other parts of the fermentation process are enabled without any major alterations being made to the building’s footprint. Production flows counterclockwise to accommodate a volume of approximately 140,000 cases annually.

Ten construction equipment companies form new group to promote sustainability

Ten major companies in the construction equipment industry have formed a coalition to promote sustainability in the sector. The France-based organization, named the Community of Sustainable Equipment Players (CAMD), includes Bouygues Construction, Colas, Eiffage, Haulotte, JCB, Kiloutou, Manitou Group, NGE, Salti, and Volvo.

The group has set out five key objectives for member companies. The group will aim to provide practical solutions and support cross-sector projects, build a knowledge base and a common decarbonization strategy, raise the profile of the materials sector and its role in the transition of the construction industry, defend the convictions of a sustainable industry, and foster a shared vision and ambition for decarbonizing the industry.

In Japan, abandoned and vacant homes are on the rise

New government figures show that 5.9% of all Japanese homes are abandoned, while 13.88% of homes are vacant (a total of 9 million homes). The issue is predominantly impacting the country's rural areas, while the number of vacant and abandoned apartments and condo units is also increasing.

Several measures have been undertaken by local and national governments to address the increased cases, which can have consequences for building upkeep and maintenance. In 2022, the city of Nagoya began requiring condo building management to update authorities on the state of their complexes, while, in 2018, Yokohama city asked architects to assess undermanaged condo buildings and set up management associations.

Winning designer of Canada’s Afghan War memorial sues government for bid slight

The winning bid for a $3.5 million contract to design a new memorial to Canadian military veterans of the war in Afghanistan from a Montreal-based studio that was replaced by the government has prompted a lawsuit by its architect. Renée Daoust is suing the federal government after it replaced hers with a proposal from the Indigenous artist Adrian Stimson citing an apparently “un-scientific” online survey, according to the CBC’s reporting last month.

"We're very concerned because it does create a precedent, a very dangerous precedent for Canada in terms of competitions, public art competitions, architectural competitions and so on," Daoust told the broadcaster. "There was political interference, so we don't want this to happen again."

Stimson is reportedly working to finalize his design without a clear resolution in sight. The American National Global War on Terror memorial in Washington, D.C. from Marlon Blackwell Architects is also being planned for the National Mall.

The newly released list of the country’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places for 2024 has been announced to include LA’s Little Tokyo district and the Walden Pond Reservation area in Massachusetts. The pair was joined by nine other sites in eight states, Morocco, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Manica Architecture debuts new NFL stadium proposal for potential Kansas City Chiefs relocation

Manica Architecture has released renderings related to a late bid to lure the Kansas City Chiefs NFL franchise across the state border to Wyandotte County, Kansas. The design has been made public for the first time a week after the firm’s plans for a new Bears lakefront stadium in Chicago were panned by critics.

Nonresidential construction spending ticks up slightly following February decline

An analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has shown nonresidential construction spending to have increased moderately by 0.2% in March. It follows February's decline of 1.0%. On a seasonally adjusted annualized basis, nonresidential spending now totals $1.19 trillion.

Spending was up in 10 of the 16 nonresidential subcategories on a monthly basis. Private nonresidential spending increased 0.2%, while public nonresidential construction spending expanded by 0.8%. The market for residential construction, conversely, was shown to have decreased by 0.7% over February.

"Nonresidential construction spending rebounded in March, ending a streak of two straight monthly declines," ABC's Chief Economist Anirban Basu said. Santa Monica Boulevard, which for many Los Angeles commuters is no more than an exit from the 405 Freeway, is actually the last piece of Route 66, “America’s Main Street”, that once spanned from Chicago to the Pacific Ocean. In Los Angeles, this wide stretch of roadway linked Downtown, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica, in a commercial corridor of remnant and outmoded automobile parts stores and showrooms - an archetype of linear, car-centric urban planning. In that stretch which, contrary to reality, seems to have more traffic than residents, is Granville1500.

What will be a research hub for AI and other disciplines in the computing sciences offers 185,000 square feet of labs, collaborative spaces, classrooms, and faculty areas inside a shingled profile that defines two eight-story pavilions.

The structure's design was limited by an existing railroad track running along the site’s north axis, creating the need for a 44-foot bridge that connects to either volume across three levels. Built in 1932 as a modern(istic) large-scale butchery in Copenhagen’s meatpacking district, since 1991 it has hosted a range of commercial businesses, today becoming a food production facility 2.0. Located within the city, ÅBEN restores the industrial legacy of the building and turns it inside out by inviting the public into the brewing processes, consequently blurring the contemporary distinction between public and production. Originally, the space functioned as chill hall, where 980 carcasses hung from a robust meat hanging rail system for 12 hours until the caloricity had left their bodies. The rails are still present, but the carcasses are replaced with steel vessels connected by kilometers of exposed piping.

Rivian puts construction of major Georgia EV plant on hold

Electric vehicle maker Rivian has pressed pause on the construction of a major manufacturing plant in Stanton Springs, Georgia. As we reported late last year, the company selected Clayco and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to deliver the 1,800-acre complex.

New European Bauhaus Academy launches skills training network

The New European Bauhaus Academy has launched a learning initiative called NEBA Alliance, a network of skills training hubs across the European Union meant to accelerate “up- and re-skilling” activities for workers in the AEC fields and adjacent professional industries. The news was shared via a press release earlier this month that included statements from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who announced the formation of the NEB Academy in November 2022.

The 2024 recipients of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC)’s National Urban Design Awards have been announced. They include twelve new projects in six provinces, each with a marked ability to advance the discipline and improve the quality of life for a broad range of Canadian communities, both large and small.

The bi-annual honors are presented in unison with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA).

The Awards jury stated: "The submissions were consistently very high quality, and focused on many of the topics we as designers are all focusing on in our ever-changing world — justice, equity, diversity and inclusion, on climate change, on resiliency and as always — on high quality design for the many end users we strive to serve."

The revised Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Sheppard Robson-led scheme at the Barbican in Central London reportedly gained planning approvals from the City of London’s planning body.
